Beside its unique traditional culture, supported by its nature beauty, this strategic position made West Nusa Tenggara; mostly Lombok Island became one of a very important tourist region in Eastern Indonesia. One of the most interesting nature tourist destinations in Lombok is Sembalun. Sembalun is a Sub District which is consists of four high land villages at the foot of Mount Rinjani. The fourth exotic village circled by mountain which is surrounded by virgin tropical rain forest with only two gates away. Traveling through forest interior, we will welcomed by the fresh air and wild vegetation along the traveling. About 45 minutes traveling from the forest border we will reach the top position of the road way. From the top we will see Sembalun view with horticulture landscape spread out evenly. If we reach the top in the morning, we can enjoy the beauty of sun rise at the side of Mount Rinjani. However, smoke will going down in the afternoon. Thousand hectares of fertile land spread out evenly supported by agro climate condition, made Sembalun preparing a very potential place for horticulture development and might be develop into agro tourism. It is because various kind of fruits such as apple, orange, grave, berry, mangos teen, longan; vegetable such as, garlic, shallots, paprika, potato, carrot, cabbage, monk bean, and ornamental crops such as chrysene, rose, polyanthus, gladiola, orchids, etc. grow best in the whole of Sembalun region. Strict border between rain and dry season preparing good condition for growth factors of some agriculture commodities, both for vegetative stage as well as reproductive stage. Elevations of villages in the area of Sembalun Sub District are 800-1500 m from sea level. Rain season fall on November - May and dry season fall on June to October every year. The highest rainfall reached on December and March, with the highest amount of rain day on both of the month between 15-26 days. On the other side, land position which is circled by mountain with only two gates in and gate away have made the whole region avoided from pest and crops diseases infection. It is possible due all of external input to and from Sembalun can be controlled from the two gates. These conditions are very suitable for horticulture seed development such as potato seed and shallot seed. Now day, the infrastructure conditions to support agriculture investment in Sembalun are good. Sembalun can be reached 2, 5 hours from Mataram (Province Capital) or 1 hour from Selong (Capital of East Lombok Regency). Other supporter factors such as man resources, energy source, water and basic need available all the year. Most of Sembalun people are farmer. They grow high land vegetable such as garlic, shallot, potato, tomato, piper, carrot, etc. Land availability for agriculture development in Sembalun Sub District is 21.708 ha, distributed into 1.105 ha irrigated field, 7.266 ha dry land, 238 home garden, and 13.099 ha for others. However, land use for people agriculture covering only ± 10 % of total land potency. Most of them work as traditional farmers and using modern agriculture equipment in small scale. The only one investor developing modern agriculture in Sembalun is PT. Agrindo Nusantara, which is covering 150 ha of land. However, they are able to manage 30 ha of their land. Sembalun Sub District covered area of 217, 08 km2, consist of 4 villages: Sembalun Lawang (53, 77%), Sembalun Bumbung (26, 70%), Bilok Petung (10, 76%), and Sajang (8, 74 %)
